Ellen Yarnell of Altoona, PA dies after battling mental illness

      The community is mourning the tragic loss of Ellen Yarnell, a beloved 2023 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, who passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Ellen, 19, succumbed to a brief battle with mental illness, leaving her family, friends, and community heartbroken.

      Ellen Yarnell was a vibrant and talented young woman born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Todd J. and Rebecca L. (Langenbacher) Yarnell. She graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 2023, where she was known for her active involvement in the band, music, and visual arts programs. Ellen was also a dedicated member of the Cross Country team.

      Continuing her passion for helping others, Ellen was studying Speech and Language Pathology at IUP’s Cook Honors College. Her commitment to her faith was evident through her participation in Young Life. Ellen’s hobbies included baking, outdoor adventures, and spending quality time with her family and her beloved dog, Luna.

      Ellen is survived by her parents, Todd and Rebecca Yarnell, and her brother, Isaac Yarnell. She also leaves behind her great-grandfather, Ron Wininger; her papa, Michael Langenbacher; great-aunts, Janice Lindsey and Ronda Wininger; uncles, Larry and Waylon Yarnell; aunt, Michelle Langenbacher; and cousins Jamen, Kaleb, Grace, and Michele and Jeff Ocker. Ellen’s kindness and infectious smile touched many lives, including her special friends: Joelle, Rachel, Victoria, Cali, Lydia, Mrs. Clever, and Mrs. Watt.

      Ellen was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nana, Grammy, and Pappy Yarnell; great-grandmothers, Nancy Wininger and Betty Langenbacher; and great-grandfather, Edgar Langenbacher.

      Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hicks Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life service will immediately follow, officiated by the Rev. Rich Morris. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Young Life, P.O. Box 333, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648, in honor of Ellen’s dedication to her faith and her community.

      Ellen Yarnell’s passing is a profound loss to all who knew her. Her legacy of kindness, dedication, and joy will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and the broader community.
