      Jacksonville was shaken by tragedy on Saturday, May 4, 2024, when Patrol Officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a distressing call regarding a shooting in the 4200 block of Roosevelt Boulevard. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered Demeshia Gainer, a 32-year-old Black female, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the swift response of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue department, Gainer was tragically pronounced deceased, marking a devastating loss for her loved ones and the community at large.

      In the aftermath of the shooting, detectives from JSO’s Homicide Unit, accompanied by members of the Crime Scene Unit, were summoned to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding Gainer’s untimely death. Through diligent investigative efforts, a person of interest was identified as Isaiah Hawkins, a 33-year-old Black male.

      On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, Hawkins was apprehended during a routine traffic stop and subsequently transported to the Police Memorial Building for questioning by Homicide Detectives. Following an intensive interview process, Hawkins was formally arrested and charged with murder, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
